The Great Disappointment
Millerites Wait All Day Tuesday; Tuesday Wins
After two earlier windows lapsed, October 22, 1844 was the date. The day after got its own name: the Great Disappointment.
What was said
“the tenth day of the seventh month of the present year, 1844”
— Samuel S. Snow and William Miller (the Millerite movement) · said Aug 1844 · due October 22, 1844
Three deadlines, zero Second Comings. The day after got its own name in the history books.
The Story
Miller first said Christ would return 'sometime between March 21, 1843, and March 21, 1844', then briefly April 18, 1844. At an August 1844 camp meeting Samuel S. Snow set 'the tenth day of the seventh month' of 1844, i.e. October 22. Miller had earlier written: 'I confess my error, and acknowledge my disappointment.'
The Seventh-day Adventist Church later grew out of the movement.
