His first rapture date, June 28, 1981, fizzled. He said God showed him he had left out the 40 days Noah's Ark took to land. The new date fizzled too, and so did 1988.

The Story
The full UPI line: the saved would escape 'the worst trouble the world has ever known' - a tyrannical government that would collapse 'when the whole earth is burned by fire by May 14, 1988.' He explained the missed June 28 date: 'The 40 days was hidden from us, the Lord showed us.'
Like whisenant-1988, the 1988 date is 40 years after Israel's founding (May 14, 1948).
