Nuclear Attack Could Come by April 23, 1990
Montana Church Heads Underground as Leader Warns Nuclear War Could Come as Soon as April 23, 1990
Elizabeth Clare Prophet's Church Universal and Triumphant built bomb shelters near Yellowstone for a 'dark cycle' ending April 23. The date passed without a strike.
What was claimed (paraphrase)
A nuclear holocaust could come as soon as April 23, 1990, when, the church said, a 'dark cycle ends'. (Summary of her warning as reported by the Los Angeles Times.)
— Elizabeth Clare Prophet, leader of the Church Universal and Triumphant · said Mar 1990 · due April 23, 1990
Busted. April 23, 1990 came, the 'dark cycle' ended on schedule, and no nuclear holocaust arrived.
The Story
The Los Angeles Times reported in March 1990 that church members were arriving in Montana's Paradise Valley to be near underground shelters 'in case of a nuclear holocaust', which Prophet said 'could come as soon as April 23'. A church spokesman said she predicted a 'dark cycle ends' on that date.
The 1991 Times profile adds the source of the date: in 1989 her 'ascended master' St. Germain declared that 'between April 23, 1990, and the year 2002 it was very likely that the Soviet Union would launch a nuclear strike on the United States', and that members should 'build fallout shelters and have food reserved for seven months.'
More than 1,500 sect members streamed into private shelters in spring 1990.
Later spin
In February 1991 Prophet told the Los Angeles Times: 'The newspapers took my statements about the increase in mankind's karma beginning April 23 and distorted it, literally fabricating that I had predicted the end of the world.' She added: 'Even if there is a nuclear war, I believe we can survive it.'
