Americans Barred From Moving Money Abroad by January 2013
Porter Stansberry, 2010: Sending Assets Overseas Will Be 'Against the Law' by January 2013
The newsletter publisher behind the viral 'End of America' video told readers they had two years to get their money out before it was 'trapped in the States.'
What was said
“I believe it'll be against the law for you to send assets overseas without restriction by January 2013.”
— Porter Stansberry (founder, Stansberry & Associates Investment Research) · said Dec 24, 2010 · due By January 2013
No U.S. capital controls arrived. Americans could still move money abroad in January 2013, subject to the reporting rules that already existed.
The Story
He went on: 'Some kind of significant capital controls will be in place in two years. So you've got two years to really prepare yourself for what's coming, otherwise all your assets are going to be trapped in the States, where they'll be confiscated or taxed or inflated away.'
The 'End of America' video (2010) forecast a dollar collapse. The FATCA reporting law passed in March 2010, before this interview, and is a reporting rule, not a ban. Compare williams-hyperinflation-2014 and wiedemer-aftershock-2013.
Later spin
In 2013 Stansberry wrote that 'in the most important way of all... my prediction has been totally wrong,' because creditors did not flee the U.S. bond market, while maintaining his 'End of America warnings were right' in many ways.
